What problem is Evergreen Collaborative working on?

The climate crisis is both an extraordinary challenge and an enormous opportunity to create a better future. Evergreen Collaborative believes the US federal government must lead the charge to defeat the climate crisis and build a thriving and just clean energy future. Evergreen is creating the blueprint for exactly how policymakers can make it happen through actionable, ambitious climate policies.

Evergreen Collaborative works on policy leadership, which Giving What We Can identified as one of the most effective strategies to tackle climate change.

What does Evergreen Collaborative do?

Evergreen Collaborative pairs bold policy products with campaign-style communications and advocacy tactics to galvanise an all-government mobilisation to tackle the climate crisis and build a just and thriving clean energy economy.

Evergreen Collaborative deploys three interrelated strategies to achieve this:

  1. Craft bold, actionable policy products outlining the pathway that press federal agencies to drive forward on reducing climate pollution.
  2. Use strategic campaign-style media and digital communications to build awareness, support, and momentum for that policy vision.
  3. Use effective advocacy to make those policies a reality, through direct engagement with decision-makers, grasstops leaders, and coordination with partners to identify and executive on strategic opportunities.

Since it was founded in 2020, Evergreen Collaborative has successfully proven its ability to influence the national climate policy landscape, with the Biden Administration’s adoption of significant pieces of the Evergreen Action Plan into their executive climate plan, as well as the passage of the most significant federal climate investment in American history: the Inflation Reduction Act. Evergreen Collaborative intends to carry that theory of change forward to ensure the effective implementation of this law and additional executive and state action to fully meet its climate and environmental justice goals.

Evergreen has also been referenced in the press as a trusted source for driving federal climate policy in outlets such as Vox, The Atlantic, E&E News, and Carbon Switch. Evergreen was cited in more than 200 stories in 2021 and more than 250 stories so far in 2022.

What information does Giving What We Can have about the cost-effectiveness of Evergreen Collaborative?

We don't currently have further information about the cost-effectiveness of Evergreen Collaborative beyond it doing work in a high-impact cause area and taking a reasonably promising approach.

Please note that GWWC does not evaluate individual charities. Our recommendations are based on the research of third-party, impact-focused charity evaluators our research team has found to be particularly well-suited to help donors do the most good per dollar, according to their recent evaluator investigations. Our other supported programs are those that align with our charitable purpose — they are working on a high-impact problem and take a reasonably promising approach (based on publicly-available information).

At Giving What We Can, we focus on the effectiveness of an organisation's work -- what the organisation is actually doing and whether their programs are making a big difference. Some others in the charity recommendation space focus instead on the ratio of admin costs to program spending, part of what we’ve termed the “overhead myth.” See why overhead isn’t the full story and learn more about our approach to charity evaluation.
