Arthur & Aluel's Wedding Fundraiser

In lieu of a traditional wedding registry, we would like to ask our guests to make a donation to a cause that is near and dear to our hearts.

As many of you know, Aluel was born in Abyei, South Sudan. Like much of sub-Saharan Africa, South Sudan struggles with a significant disease burden from malaria. From 2021 to 2024, malaria accounted for the majority of all reported disease cases in the country and nearly half of all inpatient deaths. Worldwide, over 600,000 people die of malaria every year, and 95% of those deaths are in Africa.

The Against Malaria Foundation (AMF) combats this horrible disease by distributing insecticide-treated bednets to families at risk. It is a simple, cost-effective intervention with extraordinary impact: protecting two people costs only $6, and according to the charity evaluator GiveWell, roughly $5,500 worth of nets is enough to save a life. AMF has funded net campaigns in South Sudan, including in the region where Aluel grew up (though it directs new nets wherever the funding gaps are greatest).

Aluel was lucky to grow up sleeping under a bednet. Many children in South Sudan don't: fewer than half sleep under one on a given night, even though nets are the country's primary defense against malaria. In high-transmission areas, they are estimated to cut malaria cases by about half and childhood mortality by up to 25%.
